Inclusive Lifelong Learning Conference begins in Bali / #ImALifelongLearner campaign launched
The Inclusive Lifelong Learning Conference, organized by the Republic of Indonesia in partnership with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, begins today in Bali. Over the next four days, 300 distinguished participants from around the world will chart a course toward a more inclusive approach to lifelong learning across the globe, including in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries.
The conference aims to turn the vision of education set by the Transforming Education Summit and outlined in the Marrakech Framework for Action (MFA), adopted during the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII), into tangible policies, strategies and programmes.
‘Now is the time to translate commitments into action! We must develop inclusive policies, backed by adequate funding, and implement effective programmes that empower individuals through learning, regardless of background or age. Only by working together can we build a new social contract for education, with lifelong learning as its guiding principle’, said Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, in opening the conference and on the occasion of the #ImALifelongLearner campaign launch. Ms Giannini emphasized: ‘I am proud to launch today alongside the President of Indonesia the #ImALifelongLearner campaign. My sincere gratitude to H.E. Mr Joko Widodo of Indonesia for spearheading this global campaign.’
The #ImALifelongLearner campaign mobilizes learners from every corner of the world, urging them to unite, showcase their passion for learning and inspire others to embark on their own lifelong learning journeys. The campaign serves as a reminder that the right to education is a right to lifelong learning that knows no age limits, emphasizing the imperative of providing adequate policy frameworks and programmes and robust funding for inclusive learning opportunities for individuals throughout their lives.
In his address to conference participants, H.E. Mr Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, explained: ‘Lifelong learning holds the key to unlocking Indonesia's vast potential. By equipping individuals with the skills needed for a changing workforce, and nurturing social cohesion through inclusive education, Indonesia will forge a path towards sustainable development, economic prosperity, and a harmonious society.’
As the host country of the conference, Indonesia sets an example with its Kartu Prakerja programme, demonstrating how to ensure that individuals of all backgrounds benefit from lifelong learning opportunities. Since 2020, the programme has provided reskilling and upskilling opportunities to 17 million learners.
The Inclusive Lifelong Learning Conference will serve as a platform for discussion among participants, delving into the strategies and actions that will pave the way for more inclusive lifelong learning for all.
Background
The Inclusive Lifelong Learning Conference builds on the outcomes of the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education, particularly the Marrakech Framework for Action, which was adopted on 17 June 2022. With representation from over 140 countries, this landmark agreement signifies a global commitment to translating the vision of a right to lifelong learning into a tangible reality. Leaders from around the world pledged to significantly increase adult participation in learning and recognized the urgent need for greater financial investment in adult learning and education.
