India to attend 40th General Conference of UNESCO

UNESCO New Delhi Education team led by Eric Falt, Director and UNESCO Representative, met with Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, Hon'ble Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 August 2019. The Hon’ble Minister also serves as the President of the Indian National Commission for Co-operation with UNESCO (INCCU).
Hon’ble Minister graciously accepted the invitation to attend the upcoming 40th General Conference of UNESCO scheduled in Paris from 12 to 27 November 2019, including his participation in the Ministerial Meeting on Inclusion and Mobility in Higher Education on 13 November 2019.
During the discussions, the Hon’ble Minister appreciated the role UNESCO is playing in bringing together various member states to find collective solutions to issues of common concern as well as to promote cultural and scientific exchanges. He acknowledged the vision and mission of INCCU and reaffirmed his commitment to convening the various line ministries of the Government that deal with UNESCO areas of competence in culture, science and education.
Dr. Pokhriyal hoped that like in the previous years, UNESCO would align its work with ongoing government programs and policies, including The Fit India Movement, launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 29 August, focusing on improving the health consciousness among the masses especially the youth and with the various programs on natural resource conservation under the umbrella of Swachh Bharat Mission.
Eric Falt presented Dr Pokhriyal with the State of the Education Report for India 2019: Children with Disabilities. Prepared in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, the report highlights accomplishments and challenges with regards to the right to education of children with disabilities (CWDs). Taking a step further, the report also suggests a number of concrete recommendations for strengthening the education system to better respond to the learning need of children with disabilities.
The Hon’ble Minister was also apprised of the upcoming State of Education report for 2020, which will focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).  The report will contain in-depth analysis of the current state of TVET in India and will highlight best practices and recommendations.  It is hoped that the Report will serve as a reference tool for the enhancement of policies and programs relating to skill development in India.
The cooperation between the Government of India and UNESCO dates back to 1951 when the permanent Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO (INCCU) was set up. Since then, UNESCO New Delhi has worked closely with the Ministry of Human Resource Development where the INCCU is housed.
