Information Session for Permanent Delegations on disaster risk reduction
Disaster risk reduction (DRR) is aimed at preventing new and reducing existing disaster risks and managing residual risks, all of which contribute to strengthening resilience and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. UNESCO operates at the interface of natural and social sciences, education, culture, and communication to build a global culture of resilience and supports Member States in building their capacities for climate and disaster risk management.
UNESCO's action is mainly targeting eight disaster risk reduction related topics including: Early Warning Systems; Science, technology and innovation for resilience; Built environment; Education and school safety; Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction; Disaster Risk Reduction for culture and sites; Post-disaster response; and Risk governance and social resilience.
The event will be opened by Mr Xing Qu, Deputy Director-General, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences a.i., UNESCO who will introduce the urgent need for action in terms of disaster risk prevention and management, along with UNESCO's DRR activities, tools, and services that contribute to supporting Member States in their risk management.
Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English and French.
