The International Decade of Indigenous Languages celebrates #IndigenousDay!

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples serves as a global platform to honour and amplify the voices of indigenous communities and their languages. Observed annually on 9 August, this day marks the historic commencement of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.

Across the globe, languages are disappearing at an alarming pace, with a significant number of them being indigenous languages. These linguistic treasures encapsulate the essence of peoples’ identities, cultures and complex knowledge systems cultivated over thousands of years. 9 August presents an excellent opportunity to foster awareness about the significance of indigenous languages. The right to choose and utilise language without hindrance, to expression opinions freely and to actively engage in public life without fear of discrimination are foundational prerequisite for building inclusive and equitable societies. These principles are pivotal for the establishment of open and participatory communities.

An urgent need exists to protect, revitalise and promote Indigenous languages around the world. This endeavour involves recognising their profound contributions to peacebuilding, effective governance, environmental protection and the safeguarding of diverse cultural expressions.

This year's theme for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples centres around ‘Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination’. Youth are amongst the major target groups for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages. Effective support for Indigenous languages necessitates robust engagement from indigenous individuals and language users themselves, particularly the younger generation, women, and elders. Their involvement should harness indigenous governance structures and representative bodies.
