Join UNESCO's IOC at the Climate COP28 (Dubai)

From November 30 to December 12, 2023, global leaders, ministers, negotiators, climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives, and CEOs will convene in Dubai for COP28, the significant annual gathering addressing climate action.

Confronted with worsening scientific assessments of trends in ocean and climate trends, disruptions in the energy market, and a rise in extreme weather events, COP28 aims to strengthen collaboration among nations to salvage the 2015 Paris Agreement, and fulfil commitments to foster a sustainable future for both people and the planet.

Drawing political and media attention to solutions required to protect marine ecosystems , through improved monitoring and research of ocean acidification, deoxygenation and warming and its impacts, and the importance of access to this information by each and everyone.

Our goal at the UNFCCC COP28 is to enhance oceanic knowledge among negotiating parties and stakeholders, contributing to more effective ocean solutions within climate initiatives.

Our platform for COP28 will include:

Drawing political and media attention to solutions required to protect critical ecosystems such as coral, through improved monitoring of impacts including acidification and warming and ensuring access to this knowledge by local communities;

Strengthening monitoring and understanding of coastal blue carbon ecosystems for the benefit of climate, people and biodiversity, and assist responsible ministries to improve protection of these habitats;

Improving access to ocean science support for Nationally-Determined Contributions and National Action Plans, including identification of knowledge gaps and acceleration of the development of early warning systems, leveraging the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development;

Building technical capacity for the implementation of marine spatial planning solutions that integrate climate change concerns based on the best available science;

Calling on nations to invest in ocean observations to fill knowledge gaps, including in deep carbon, in developing countries, and in polar regions, potentially developing a global goal for systematic observations of the climate, including a robust and integrated ocean observing system to tackle climate adaptation and mitigation.
