New publication: Best Practices of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves
The second publication of the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves proceeds from the 2nd meeting of this Network, held in Jeju, Republic of Korea, in September 2012.
The book compiles the presentations of all the Island Biosphere Reserves that came to this meeting – West Estonian Archipelago (Estonia), Siberut Island (Indonesia), Yakushima (Japan), Islands of the Gulf of California (Mexico), Palawan (Philippines), Santana Madeira (Portugal), Jeju Island and Shinan Dadohae (Republic of Korea) , El Hierro, Gran Canaria and Menorca (Spain), Island of Principe (São Tomé and Príncipe) – and it provides as well an update on the progress made by this network including the statement, which was signed in Jeju.
Nowadays there is a clear indication that islands are becoming more and more important within the global network. In particular, the role of island biosphere reserves have evolved into land and seascapes that are dedicated to experimenting with principles and practice of sustainable development, taking into account as well the geographical and political dimensions. Island biosphere reserves are places for people and nature to coexist and find concrete ways of interacting with one another that can guide sustainability in action for the future.
