Out-of-School Girls Enrolled at Non-Formal Education Centre, Tor Zeerak, District Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Ninety-eight percent (98%) population of Tor Zeerak live below the poverty line and major occupations are farming and labourer.

The hostility between the communities of Tor Zeerak and sour Zeerak, Tehsil Pranghar, district Mohmand closed the doors of girls’ education for the residents of the former one. In sour zeerak, girls have no problem of transition from primary to lower secondary level. The girls of the Tor Zeerak, after primary education, cannot continue middle school at Sour Zeerak, consequently, all such girls get confined within the boundaries of their homes. Ninety-eight (98) % population of Tor Zeerak live below the poverty line and major occupations are farming and labourer. After getting out of school, most girls are subjected to all sorts of exploitations such as Early marriages and domestic subjugation as many consider these girls as liabilities to their families.

Upon the request of the community and recommendation of the education department, in March 2022, UNESCO established an NFE center at village Tor Zeerak through its Implementing Partner, Friends Welfare Association (FWA) with the funding support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in just a month, twenty (20) out-of-school girls were enrolled, and fifteen (15) more identified. NFE Tor Zeerak has fulfilled the criteria of E&SED KP by getting enrolled 20 girls and there is an ample chance that this school will be converted into formal Girls’ middle school after the due process as the Education Department district Mohmand strongly recommends the upgradation of this school.

I am really pleased upon availability of NFE center in my village. Owing to a dispute, we were denied the access to girl’s middle school Sour Zeerak & lost two worthy years of my life. Now, provided the facility, I can achieve my dreams to be a teacher and serve the community, I belong to.
