The Southern Africa Liberation History - Side event to the 42nd General Conference

This side-event to the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO aims to mobilize Member States in favour of UNESCO’s Southern African Liberation History (SALH) project. The project, started in Namibia in 2018, focuses on revitalizing the solidarity spirit for freedom and peace, especially amongst youth, and engaging the countries involved in this history.

The high-level political support given to this project highlights its historical importance and global relevance to today’s immediate challenges. The screening of the short film “Youth in the Liberation Struggles” and the presentation of the publications already released, will inform the ensuing panel discussion featuring high-level political leaders and officials from the SADC region.  The discussion will centre on the core issues and goals of the SALH, in addition to an intergenerational dialogue between some Youth Forum participants and the high-level panellists.

The event will also reflect on the outcomes of the Regional Conference “HERstory: Heroines in the Liberation Struggles in Southern Africa” organized by the Social and Human Sciences team of UNESCO’s Regional Office for Southern Africa, on 6-7 July 2023 in Maputo, Mozambique with the participation of young journalists, artists and history students.
