Paris Peace Forum 2022 Selects UNESCO's AI Capacity Building Project for the Judiciary

At the 5th Paris Peace Forum, UNESCO presented its Global Initiative on AI and the Rule of Law under the theme of 'ensuring a safer and ethical digital world'.

The Forum, held from 11 to 12 November 2022, showcased 60 projects demonstrating real-world solutions to the global interconnected and complex challenges that communities face.

Through this project, UNESCO has assisted over 4500 judicial operators from 138 countries in gaining knowledge on the human rights and ethical implications of artificial intelligence through a Massive Open Online Course on AI and the Rule of Law.

AI helps judicial systems all over the world in reducing administrative workloads while improving judicial efficiency, access to justice, and judicial decisions. With the widespread use of AI, judicial actors must be aware of, and respond to, the challenges and opportunities associated with utilising AI in judicial systems. AI is a tool that works at scale, from the massive datasets on which it is trained to its deployment and availability to anyone connected. As a result, AI had a greater impact on the communities it serves. Hence, judicial officers and other AI users must exercise caution when leveraging AI.

UNESCO continues to promote cooperation among partners and stakeholders to strengthen capacities of judicial operators. In 2023, UNESCO will expand the project by providing judicial operators with concrete tools for assessing ethical impact, such as its upcoming Global Toolkit on AI and the Rule of Law.
