On 9 December 2022, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), together with the Swedish non-governmental organization Språkkraft and the Nordic Council of Ministers, will host the second ‘Informal Language Learning and Media for Migrants in the Nordics’ conference, in Voksenåsen, Oslo, Norway, and online.

Literacy is central to a person’s lifelong learning journey and fundamental to the empowerment of migrants. Literacy contributes to resilience building, improved self-confidence and self-esteem, greater prospects for employment, better health outcomes, a stronger sense of agency, and a motivation to learn and to socially integrate.

This conference will provide a platform for representatives of public authorities, civil society, formal education and immigrant groups to exchange experiences and the latest research on language learning of migrants. Breakout sessions on the role of municipalities in informal language learning for migrants, informal language learning in the workplace, and media and migrants will enable a lively exchange among participants.
