I condemn the killing of Marco Aurelio Ramírez. Violence targeting investigative journalists just for doing their jobs deprives society of the right to free and independent information. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The journalist was shot at least five times while driving away from his home in the city of Tehuacán in Puebla State.

Ramírez had been an investigative journalist for almost 3 decades and had worked for several local media outlets, including the Periódico Central and Central Puebla. At the time of his death, he had been hosting a morning show on the radio station Stereo Luz FM. He had also previously worked as a civil servant.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
