I condemn the killing of Nelson Matus Peña. I call upon the authorities to thoroughly investigate his tragic death. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

The journalist was reportedly ambushed and shot dead by armed assailants as he was entering his vehicle in the neighborhood of Colonia Emiliano Zapata in the mid-afternoon. Matus Peña was the founder and director of the online news outlet Lo Real de Guerrero, which often reported on instances of local violence. He survived an assassination attempt in 2019.

He is the fifth journalist to be killed in Mexico in 2023.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
