UNESCO's work on youth is guided by the principle of "youth as partners" - recognizing the value of youth voices and perspectives in shaping policies and practices that affect their lives. The meaningful inclusion of youth as both beneficiaries and partners is a major area of focus for UNESCO. Furthermore, UNESCO’s work is co-designed with young people, engaging with youth as knowledge bearers, change agents and problem-solvers to address challenges and crises in the Caribbean region. This knowledge product on the Value-added of Meaningful Youth Engagement in the Caribbean is drafted and validated by youth. It was elaborated based on key discussion points and recommendations stemming from focus group sessions with youth from the Caribbean. This document intends to improve the inclusion and participation of young people in setting agendas and the decision-making process. At UNESCO, we are convinced that engaging young people in decisions that affect them is not just a matter of right, it is a matter of principle.

This knowledge product highlights the challenges and barriers to meaningful youth engagement in the Caribbean as identified by youth. It underscores the most pressing development issues and provides practical strategies and recommendations for effective youth engagement. It emphasizes the need to address challenges highlighted by youth, such as social inequalities, political influence, the lack of youth voice in the development of public policies and limited coordination between youth structures, that are hindering effective youth participation and engagement. Meaningful youth engagement in the Caribbean is essential for building a more inclusive and sustainable future. This is why young people from different backgrounds and cultures throughout the region were brought together to generate ideas and approaches in advancing their genuine involvement in meaningful initiatives.

The primary audience for this document are youth policy makers and practitioners who will recognize youth as an important stakeholder group for achieving inclusive development. It is meant for those persons who desire to take initiative in embracing the inclusion of young people in all stages of planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs and policies. In this document the perspectives of youth in the Caribbean are captured succinctly. Therefore, the practical strategies for bolstering meaningful youth engagement are easily actionable and aligned to catering to the challenges and concerns of youth. Youth remain a driving force for societal change and so we invite you to read and share this document as we aim to promote the meaningful engagement of youth throughout the Caribbean.
