A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis
The 31st edition of World Press Freedom Day highlights the significant role played by the press, journalism, access, and dissemination of information to ensure and secure a sustainable future that respects the rights of individuals and their diversity of voices, as well as gender equality.
The Day serves as a platform to bring together key actors and reflect on the fundamental role of journalism and reliable information in protecting our planet and discuss topics, including: The importance of reliable and accurate information, especially that which denounces and investigates the environmental crisis and its effects.
Objectives of the Competition:
This photography competition aims to celebrate and raise awareness about the vital role of media and journalists in tackling the environmental crisis, with a particular focus on Nepal. This competition also aims to promote the significant role of Nepali media and journalists who have contributed to setting Nepal's agenda on the global platforms through their compelling environmental reporting.

- Environmental issues specific to Nepal
- The impact of climate change, pollution, and resource depletion on the lives and livelihoods of Nepali people.
- Showcasing efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable practices within the country.
- Depicting the risks and obstacles faced by Nepali journalists while reporting on environmental issues including climate change.
Eligibility Criteria: The competition is open to Nepali citizens who are 18 years and above. The contents should have been produced in the time frame of April 2021 to March 2024.
Submission Guidelines:
- Only one photo can be submitted by one person.
- Upload a photo here..
- with a brief synopsis (up to 200 words) and signed grant of rights and (due credits where applicable).
- Make a folder with your name. The folder must contain 1 photograph, the signed grant of rights form (available in the same folder) and a synopsis.
Deliverable: Photos high-quality maximum 5MP and in JPEG or JPG image format
Submission deadline: 18 April 2024 (Midnight Nepal time)
Selection Process: The selection process will be conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a panel of experts will review all entries and shortlist the top 10 contents in all three categories. In the second stage, the shortlisted photographs will go through further screening to decide the final winners based on the technical competency of the work.
Prizes: The top three winners will receive exciting prizes and abundant opportunities to engage with UNESCO. The top 10 photographs will be displayed at a public exhibition during the World Press Freedom Day celebration in Kathmandu on 3 May 2024, and featured on UNESCO's platforms, and showcased in thematic events.
