UNESCO is the only UN agency with a mandate to promote ‘the free flow of ideas by word and image’ and ‘to maintain, increase and diffuse knowledge’. In line with this mandate, UNESCO promotes freedom of expression, the safety of journalists, and free, independent and pluralistic media. UNESCO strives to create inclusive societies where information is shared transparently and accessed freely.
