UNESCO Cairo

About the Office
Last update:14 April 2024

UNESCO Cairo was established in 1947. As the UNESCO Regional Office for Egypt and Sudan has a unique constituency since it covers two countries where UNESCO is present. This double character in a contiguous geography reinforces cooperation and multiple synergies. The closed cooperation established since the beginning of the Sudan crisis in April 2023 makes our work a reference for other crises. Even though UNESCO is not a humanitarian agency, it was not prevented from being an active member in supporting Sudanese learning and teaching communities in Egypt. The UNESCO Office in Cairo has performed as a catalyst for UNESCO Sudan staff and families, and it has benefited from the daily support of Sudanese experts in all domains of our mandate.

As per the decision of the Director General of UNESCO, UNESCO Cairo also is the Liaison Office with the League of Arab States (LAS). LAS has been officially informed, and coordination meetings have started to prepare the renewal of the memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions and the related action plan that covers all the domains of our mandate and involves the leading ministerial councils and committees of the League of Arab States.
