About UNESCO Guatemala

Last update:31 May 2023

The UNESCO Representative Office in Guatemala focuses its work on peace-building and sustainable development through Education, Science, Culture and Communication and Information. Both objectives involve achieving social goals and balances for inclusion, dignity and respect for the human rights of all, with particular emphasis on working with the most vulnerable sectors of the country. The contribution made by our Office is in line with the Organization's areas of competence, so it's presence and technical support in the areas of Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture and Communication and Information is significant and strategic.

The Office was founded in 1996, the year in which the Agreements on a Firm and Lasting Peace were signed, a period in which UNESCO's contribution was essential through programs and projects on the Culture of Peace, Multicultural Education and the protection of Cultural Heritage. At present, it continues to work in all areas of its mandate in accordance with the requirements of State institutions and the country's most pressing needs.

Within the framework of the United Nations System in the country, UNESCO implements joint projects with financial support aimed at achieving the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Partnerships with other institutions, non-governmental organizations and cooperation agencies are essential to make possible the realization of UNESCO's work in Guatemala.
