Safeguarding Documentary Heritage at Risk
The UNESCO Memory of the World Programme aims to preserve documentary heritage around the globe and provide its universal accessibility. In pursuit of its mission, the Programme raises awareness of the importance of incorporating a disaster management approach for the sustainable preservation of documentary heritage, as documentary items and collections become more vulnerable to natural and man-made disasters.
In this regard, policy advocacy and capacity-building activities with a focus on disaster management have been implemented globally with the support of the Japanese Funds-In-Trust since 2018. The partnership aims to advance policy advocacy on disaster risk reduction and management among Member States, as well as to strengthen capacities in memory institutions - archives, libraries, museums and research centers - around the world in an ongoing project phase.
Forging partnerships
A dedicated UNESCO Memory of the World Safeguarding Initiative for Documentary Heritage at Risk has been incorporated into the ongoing phase of the project, seeking to create worldwide partnerships to protect the world's documentary heritage under threat by global risks.
The initiative provides financial assistance for projects of national, regional, or international scope that address specific needs of memory institutions or that contribute to safeguarding documentary items and collections at risk (read more).
