UNESCO’s project “Supporting the Completion of Basic Education for Syrian Refugees in Lebanon” is funded by King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre and implemented in partnership with Kayany Foundation. It intends to widen education opportunities, progressing and pathways, and ensure retention for at risk Syrian students in Lebanon, especially at the middle and high school levels. It links to ongoing initiatives related to the education of the Syrians in Lebanon, trying to fill the gap and complement recent efforts.
Background
The conflict in Syria, which started in 2011, has provoked a large-scale displacement in the region, as well as substantial disruptions in vital social sectors in host countries, including education, posing significant pressure on host communities.
Lebanon alone has received around 1.1 million refugees, 483000 are school age children (3 to 18 years old). In such circumstances, there is an utmost need of capacity building for creating learning, inclusive and peaceful environments to welcome and encourage Syrian children to feel included, enroll in schools and to improve their educational retention.
UNESCO and partners believe that education can make a vital difference in all these areas by building and sustaining resilient education systems, tipping the balance in favor of peace and the well-being of children. What is thus most urgently needed is to reach the unreached and the at-risk children through innovative and diverse learning pathways for the Syrian children and youth in Lebanon, so as to not leave young men and women in crucial formative years behind in their quest for life and work.
Overview of the project
The project intends to enhance retention and participation of at risk children and to increase the demand for education, especially among middle and high school students. It will link to ongoing initiatives related to the education of the Syrians in Lebanon, trying to fill the gap and compliment recent efforts.
The goal of the project is to widen education opportunities, progressing and pathways and ensure retention for at risk Syrian students in Lebanon
Objectives
- Provide Syrian students with complementary education opportunities and educational and psychological support programs to complete basic education
- Foster an educational environment that stimulates learning
- Support and enable mothers of Syrian children, in addition to Palestinians who moved to Lebanon recently as a result of the war in Syria through educational, teaching, awareness and vocational programs that help them acquire new skills
King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center
King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre is an international organization providing humanitarian aid and relief to those in need outside of the Kingdom’s borders. The activities of the center were inaugurated in May of 2015 under the high patronage and guidance of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
Kayany Foundation
Kayany Foundation is a Lebanese non-governmental organization founded in 2013 in response to the Syrian crisis. Kayany operates educational programs for Syrian refugee children and youth residing in the informal tented settlements (ITSs). In partnership with the Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service at AUB, the foundation established GHATA portable schools in the Beqaa valley. With this effective and sustainable school design, Kayany took a leading role in bringing Education to “OUT OF SCHOOL” refugees. Its projects and programs have been expanding ever since.
