UNESCO and the World Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE), federating four non-governmental organizations in partnership with UNESCO, organized the discussion session to map the needs of education providers and identify promising policies and approaches for maximizing the positive impact of the synergy between culture and education. The participants outlined the key factors defining this success:

- inclusive access to teacher education,

- allocation of sufficient time to culture and the arts in education and curricula

- improved quality of pre-service and in-service teacher education that recognizes cultural diversity,

- promotion of the importance of digital literacy and digital citizenship skills for teachers and learners

- increased multi-stakeholder cooperation between teachers and educators, cultural and social workers, artists, community organizers and other actors.

UNESCO and WAAE also launched an online survey on culture and arts education to assess the current and future challenges and needs of educators advancing this agenda worldwide.

The outcomes of the session and survey will jointly contribute to shaping the future UNESCO Global Framework on Culture and Arts Education, which will be endorsed at the World Conference on Culture and Arts Education in the United Arab Emirates in December 2023.

The event was part of the WAAE World Summit of Arts Education that took place from 1 to 3 March 2023 under the theme ‘Heritage and sustainability: sustaining islands of culture and arts education”, and was organized by the Madeira Regional Government, the Regional Secretary of Education, Science and Technology, and the Conservatory – Professional School of Arts of Madeira.
