Project

Train the Trainer: Journalists' Security and Peacebuilding in Central America

The "Train the Trainer" project aims to address the vulnerability of journalists in Central America through a certificate in journalists' security and peacebuilding. The project will benefit 75 teachers and their students.
Safety for jounalists

The project, funded by the International Programme for the Development of Communication, is an initiative that seeks to help journalists in Central America, who face many risks and dangers in their work. Despite the efforts made by UNESCO, there is still a problem in the inclusion of important topics such as freedom of expression, journalist protection, and peace promotion in the curricula of Central American universities.

To solve this problem, the University for Peace proposes an online course that will last 35 hours and will be divided into six sessions. At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate in journalist safety and peacebuilding. This course will help participants teach topics related to journalist safety and peacebuilding.

The topics that will be addressed in the course include understanding international regulations that guarantee freedom of the press, creating plans to mitigate risks, analyzing social conflicts, gender perspective in content creation, and evaluating relevant topics for peaceful communication.

The target group is university professors of communication and other related fields in Central America. The student body will also indirectly benefit through the faculty.

Activities of the project

  • Development of the academic program to train participants in journalist security and peacebuilding.
  • Virtual teaching of the contents.
  • Presentation of the final projects. These projects will demonstrate how the participants will include some of the studied topics in their classes.
