Enhancing Educational Quality: UNESCO's Initiatives for Teachers in Afghanistan
Social-Emotional learning

In support of teachers in Afghanistan, UNESCO developed an interim teacher competency framework for general education of Afghanistan to provide a basis for conducting a teacher competency assessment which will inform programmes for improving the quality of general education.

UNESCO also developed a provisional teacher support mechanism in collaboration with development partners to help create coordinated and harmonized approaches to teacher education and training programme and support for the delivery of quality teaching.

A social emotional learning teachers’ guide was developed and contextualized and to be incorporated in teacher training programmes conducted by education partners.

UNESCO supports the development of a teachers’ guide on “Safe to Learn”, which is used to build the capacity of in-service teachers to protect adolescent youths in school and training tutors to create a safe learning environment for youth.

UNESCO is to commission a student learning assessment to measure foundational skills for literacy acquisition and numeracy and mathematics in the early grades, with a view to providing the baseline data as benchmarks for improving learning outcomes through education service delivery.

Following UNESCO’s study on technology assisted multiple learning modalities, UNESCO works with education stakeholders including academicians to promote the use of technology in education during emergencies to sustain learning and improve access to education in Afghanistan.

To address the shortage of teachers and specifically digital literate teachers, UNESCO is to support teachers' capacity building in 21st-century teaching skills and online teaching including radio-based pedagogy.
