Disaster risk reduction

UNESCO is acting across the board, in advocating for risk awareness, prevention, and preparedness and build back better, in fostering learning and in building capacity.
EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI OBSERVATION SYSTEM

Operating at the interface between the natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication, UNESCO seeks to strengthen the resilience of societies - through capacity building, knowledge sharing and networking, early warning and policy advice, working with governments, civil society, research institutions, other UN agencies and international organizations, and all key actors. Working alone or in collaboration with both UN Agencies and other scientific entities, UNESCO has been a catalyst for international, inter-disciplinary cooperation in many aspects of disaster risk reduction and mitigation.

Within the framework of the disaster risk reduction working group, UNESCO proposes to support the G20 notably through:

  • Digital platforms for flood, drought and ocean for early warning system, interactive online platform on nature-based solutions, and the digital innovation platform for innovative solutions (under development).

  • Policy review methodologies such as building regulation review for resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

  • Technical methodologies such as risk assessment tool for school building, water risk assessment, AI tools (AI Chatbot for risk communication and identifying the best investment for retrofitting infrastructures).
