French customs return 998 stolen fossils to UNESCO Global Geopark in Brazil
On 24 May French customs officers returned a palaeontological treasure trove to the Brazilian authorities 998 fossils dating from the Cretaceous period 14565 million years ago These fossils had been stolen from a geopark in the basin of Araripe in north Brazil that has been part of a UNESCO global network since 2006 The fossils were seized by customs officers in the French port of Le Havre in 2013 It is understood that the traffickers who were later arrested in Brazil had been planning to sell them via Internet
