Launch of UNESCO Report on Museums and Collections

UNESCO Report on the implementation of the Recommendation on Museums & Collections available online

UNESCO has launched a new report on the implementation of UNESCO’s Recommendation on Museums and Collections, reflecting the responses of 56 countries to a global consultation on museums launched by UNESCO, in cooperation with the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and regional experts.

Recognizing the key role that museums play in promoting sustainable development, bolstering the creative economy and promoting social cohesion, the report examines existing legislation and statistics concerning museums, as well as the implementation of national museum policies and measures. It highlights the challenges faced by countries worldwide in empowering museums to fulfill their mission, and provides examples of good practices at the national level.

This Report will serve as a roadmap for the implementation of the 2015 Recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections, their Diversity and their role in Society, which reaffirms the importance of museums for UNESCO’s mandate.
