UNESCO supports #MuseumWeek

Held from 23 to 29 April, the theme of this fifth edition of #MuseumWeek is “life in society”, focusing on the values of tolerance and citizenship. The event aims to infuse the digital environment, which is often dominated by intolerance, with the cultural, artistic, technical, and scientific content promoted by museums.

The principle of the event is simple: around the formula “7 days, 7 themes, 7 hashtags”, museums, galleries, archive centers, libraries and other cultural institutions around the world, celebrate Culture, art and science with their public on social networks.

In 2015 the UNESCO General Conference adopted the Recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections, their Diversity and their Role in Society. UNESCO has long recognized that museums are key players in promoting the values of heritage, diversity and intercultural dialogue.

Cultural institutions and museums are living laboratories of creativity, inspiring new ideas and the creation of solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing societies today. In order to support the museum community in its efforts to promote their work digitally, UNESCO has decided to actively support #MuseumWeek, the world’s first cultural event on social media. This well-known initiative brings together more than 4,500 cultural institutions from 100 countries online each year.

This cultural event is co-organized by UNESCO’s #Unite4Heritage and the French NGO Culture for Causes Network, and sponsored by Fondation CHANEL, which engages in promoting women in the arts and the advancement of gender equality through art and culture.
